Piano Teachers Forum Program Calendar
2010-2011

September 10, 2010 - RUSSELL McTAGUE Meditation for All

Fellow PTF member Russell McTague will offer a variety of meditation styles and methods that come from various perspectives for you to experience. Meditation is a state one enters, not necessarily a technique one does. This is your opportunity to explore through active participation the concept of meditation as an aid for your life and teaching. Pre-register by September 1, 2010 through Barbara Duffy 609-530-1360 or bdcd@verizon.net.

October 1, 2010 - SYLLABUS PROGRAM begins at 9:00 sharp, coffee at 8:30.

Members of the Piano Teachers Forum will present all selections from our 2011 Festival Syllabus, Colorful Impressions.

November 5, 2010 - FORREST KINNEY Music is Feeling: A New Way of Teaching Creativity

Would you like to spontaneously create music that emerges directly from your feelings, music that is unscripted, unrehearsed, and surprising? This rich experience is not limited to those with talent, genius, or skill—even beginners and those "stuck to the page" can experience this because everyone has feelings, and with the right approach, feelings will guide us from tone to tone.

December 3, 2010 - INGRID CLARFIELD The Road to Chopin

Your student is dying to play the Minute Waltz, but they're still in Book 3 of their method book! How do you get them there? In this session, teachers will discover repertoire that will prepare students for the technical and musical challenges they will encounter in their first Chopin pieces.

January 7, 2011 - SHEILA PAIGE Anatomy and Posture and How Motion Affects Sound

Understanding how the body is put together and how it is designed to move helps pianists, teachers and students with technique. The easier and more fluid the technique, the more the performer's focus can shift to the music and away from worrying about the notes. Good posture and balance can free arms and hands for coordinated and natural movement to occur. Different hand, arm and finger movements change tone, color and phrasing. You can let your body work with your musicianship, not against it.

February 4, 2011 - PAUL MORAVEC A Composer’s World Today

This is a lecture on the pleasures and challenges of being a contemporary American non-Pop composer. It includes some in-depth discussion of recent works, with recorded excerpts.

March 4, 2011 - JAMES LYKE Introducing American Classic Songwriters to Young Pianists and Adult Students

Dr. Lyke will present a variety of solo and duet material by great American songwriters such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Jerome Kern. He will stress sensitivity to musical line, syncopated rhythms, advanced harmony, balance between voices and shaping interpretation through the study of lyrics.

April 1, 2011 - PETER TAKACS Pulse, tempo, rhythm, phrasing: The heartbeat of music

Dr. Takacs will present an examination of various aspects of musical time, such as meter and pulse, tempo giusto, rhythmic organization, and phrase relationships, in search of natural musical elements such as breathing, singing, walking, and dancing, with examples from piano, chamber, and orchestral literature.

May 6, 2011 - Planning Ahead for 2011-2012

Come, let us focus together to plan what all of us would like our next year's programs to be. Share your feelings and thoughts so that your voice is an active part of our Forum. Your vote is important and needed to ensure that a wide variety of perspectives are included. All of us together IS what makes the Forum work.

June 4, 2011 - Potluck at home of Lidia Usami. Details later.
