2007-2008

November 2, 2007 MARVIN BLICKENSTAFF

"A Review of the 2008 Syllabus"
Marvin Blickenstaff needs no real introduction since we consider him our friend, neighbor, and master teacher. His credentials are long and range internationally, but we know him best in his current position, Board President of the Frances Clark Center for Keyboard Pedagogy .

November 30, 2007 JOEL PHILLIPS

"Training the Complete Musician"
Joel Phillips "is a super teacher, extremely knowledgeable, but able to humorously express everything in clear, meaningful and inspiring ways." He has been Professor of Composition and Music Theory at WCC for over 20 years. He composes commercially and has received many impressive awards. His music is published by four different publishers. He has also published a two-volume textbook, The Musician's Guide to Aural Skills and has another textbook, The Musician's Guide to Fundamentals forthcoming.

January 4, 2008 KATHLEEN RILEY

"Piano Performance Under the Microscope"
Kathleen Riley should be fascinating, as she is using exciting new methods for technical and musical improvement. A Ph.D. from NYU where she is music professor and researcher, she uses biofeedback to analyze movement and technique. She also interprets results from sEMG, video and MIDI data and links them together. Come and find out what all this means!

February 1, 2008 SCOTT BURNHAM

"Experiencing Beethoven's Piano Sonatas"
Scott Burnham, the most popular speaker at the 2007 Golandsky Summer Institute held at Princeton, had his audiences mesmerized! Chairman of the Music Department at Princeton, he is known to be very humorous, incredibly informative, and a prolific writer. He will talk to us about Beethoven's piano sonatas as a kind of journey for the pianist. Don't miss him!

March 7, 2008 ILYA ITIN

"A Performer's Perspective on the Works of Rachmaninoff"
Ilya Itin, who, as the winner of the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition, was invited to perform the Rachmaninoff Concerto #3 with Sir Simon Rattle conducting the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. According to the reviews, he is "a delicious and rare talent…..the perfect pianist who transforms romantic revelry into rhythmic force…plays with unbelievable power and accuracy achieved with minimum physical effort…remarkable pianist everyone should experience at least once…!" And he is coming to play and speak to us right here!! What an opportunity for us to hear him play and discuss Rachmaninoff. The BBC TV said, "I'd go and hear him play the phonebook!" Come and bring friends! He's HOT!
