Coffee Time at 8:30. Members of the Piano Teachers' Forum will present all selections from our 2009 Festival Syllabus, "Celebrate America."
November 7, 2008 - LINDA M. FIELDS: From Listening to Literacy
Literacy has been defined as the ability to turn sound into symbol and symbol into sound. Some believe that a knowledge of how a child learns language can help a teacher bring music notation to life. Find out how listening with understanding can lead to both confident reading and musical artistry.
December 5, 2008 - MARVIN BLICKENSTAFF: Celebrate America!
Marvin will once again will present an overview of this year's Festival Syllabus -- Celebrate America!. His discussion will cover all levels of the syllabus and will focus on interpretation, teaching tips, and practice suggestions for our students.
January 9, 2009 - NORMAN SELDIN: Blues, Song Writing and Show Performance
Internationally recognized musician Norman Seldin will introduce us to new ways to see the piano and he will perform for us. This is going to cover a wide variety of issues that we're sure members will find unusual, educational and interesting.
February 6, 2009 - SUZANNE M. SCHMIDT: Composing: Practical Tips for Student Success
This workshop will focus on practical suggestions for composing music by students of all ages and levels of advancement. Topics will include: Effective melody writing, basic harmonic structure, and harmonizing your melody. In addition, song forms and adding text will also be discussed. Time permitting; teachers are encouraged to bring composition questions for discussion.
March 6, 2009 - JANE BUTTARS: Improvisation: A Tool for Players and Teachers
Why improvise? How do we do it? What methods will benefit our students? Even if you've never done it before, you will discover improvisation techniques you can try yourself and use in a myriad of teaching situations - from solving rhythm and memory problems or inspiring a student who is losing interest, to freeing interpretive imagination and engaging each member of a class. Jane holds a doctorate in keyboard performance, is a certified improvisation facilitator and the Graduate Director of Music for People, and has presented numerous improvisation workshops for both teachers and performers. Come and find out ways to help your students learn faster and have more fun!
April 3, 2009 - ENA BRONSTEIN BARTON: Technique: a means to expressive playing
Ena Bronstein Barton will explore the relation between relaxation and movement as affecting tone quality, phrasing, ease at the keyboard and other musical elements. Examples will be presented from Czerny Op.821 and Chopin Preludes and some Etudes. Members of the PTF will be encouraged to bring specific problems, passages and other questions.
