November 6, 2009 CATHERINE ROLLIN Technique and Artistry: You Can’t Have One Without the Other.
In this session, Catherine will explore how we can develop technical skills that will enhance the art of making music. Catherine will demonstrate not only the skills, but how she teaches them and then give many examples of how to implement them in the actual music.
December 4, 2009 KYMBERLY TINDALL Teaching Piano to a Child With Disabilities
This presentation will act as an overview for what a teacher might encounter, available resources, problem solving, and teaching techniques for success in teaching a child with disabilities. Many teachers have concerns about taking on a child with a disability but armed with a few new ideas, the experience will be rewarding for the child, family, and teacher alike.
January 8, 2010 JIM GOLDSWORTHY Time for Every Musical Matter
Gathering our thoughts on time and its relationship to every musical matter brings us closer to an understanding of the power of rhythm, meter, and flow. Seeking and keeping a closer connection to this power helps all teacher-students of music to experience everything beautiful in its musical time more fully. In our time together, we will explore many examples of organization in music and consider the ways in which we plant time understanding in our students.
February 5, 2010 WENDY YOUNG Baroque Performance Practices on the Piano
Does one have to be a harpsichordist or a musicologist to play Baroque music stylishly? What is an authentic performance? Should the piano pretend to be a harpsichord? Should we try to emulate Glenn Gould? ..Andras Schiff? ..or Wanda Landowska? And what about those ornaments? These questions, and more, will be addressed during this master class on Baroque Performance Practice. Come and listen to your colleagues play the music of Baroque composers and join in the discussion as we explore the many approaches to Baroque music on a ‘modern’ instrument.
March 5, 2010 KATHY TOTH Open Forum: Music Acquisition, How to Peruse in the 21st Century
Although we are taught not to judge a book by its cover, when choosing music, the cover and the book’s title are sometimes all we have to use in making a selection. While our ability to enter a local music store to browse has become limited or non-existent, an established forum of publisher and composer websites may be the answer to some of our frustrations with music acquisition. Come join this forum prepared to consider engaging new kinds of tools to enable you to see and hear new music before making your decision to buy.
April 9, 2010 KEVYN MALLOY and TONY PANZETTA Practice the Piano Lesson or Else! Igniting Vision or Burying Motivation
Kevyn, Ph. D in Psychology, and her husband, Tony, M.D., specializing in psychiatry, will explore some of the competencies that make effective leaders and not coincidentally make effective teachers……even piano teachers.
